What is Sleep Apnea?

Vector 1

Sleep apnea is a medical disorder in which your breathing repeatedly stops and starts while you sleep. During sleep, the muscles in the back of your throat relax. In some people, these relaxed muscles can collapse and block the airways. When you stop breathing, your brain senses danger and partially wakes you to reopen the airways.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sleep apnea treatment questions we are commonly asked:

How does sleep apnea occur?

Accurate diagnosis is crucial for receiving the appropriate treatment for sleep apnea, which manifests in three forms:

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA):

OSA involves the blockage of the airway, typically caused by a genetic abnormality leading to excess tissue in the tongue, throat, or nose. This form of sleep apnea can often be addressed effectively with Oral Appliance Therapy.

Central Sleep Apnea:

Central sleep apnea occurs when there is a brief disruption in communication, with the brain failing to send the proper signals to the muscles responsible for breathing.

Mixed Sleep Apnea (Complex Sleep Apnea):

Mixed sleep apnea is a combination of central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea, presenting a more complex pattern that requires tailored treatment approaches.

What are some symptoms of sleep apnea?

Recognize the symptoms of sleep apnea in yourself or a family member, which may include:

  • Regular loud snoring
  • Episodes of not breathing or gasping for air during sleep
  • Memory loss
  • Morning fatigue
  • Changes in weight, either gain or loss
  • Heartburn
  • Recurring headaches
  • Nighttime perspiration

If diagnosed with sleep apnea, consult our highly qualified dentists to inquire about the suitability of Oral Appliance Therapy as a potential treatment option for you.

How can my dentist help me with sleep apnea?

Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) is an effective treatment for mild to moderate sleep apnea and snoring issues resulting from recurrent airway obstruction. Our affiliated dental offices offer personalized solutions to address obstructive sleep apnea, employing custom-made oral appliances worn during sleep. Sleep and snore guards are oral devices that help maintain an open airway.

If your sleep apnea is linked to your tongue obstructing the airway, a tongue-retaining device may be the optimal solution. Alternatively, if jaw positioning contributes to your sleep issues, our dentist can provide a device and/or headgear to reposition your jaw and ensure airway openness. These devices are worn exclusively during sleep and are easily removable.

For individuals with severe sleep apnea, oral appliances may not be suitable. In such cases, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is the preferred choice. However, if the CPAP mask proves cumbersome or ineffective, discuss alternative options with your primary care physician or sleep specialist for personalized recommendations.

How does untreated sleep apnea affect me?
Left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to serious health complications such as heart attack, cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension, memory issues, and difficulty concentrating. Seeking timely treatment is crucial to mitigate these potential risks and safeguard overall well-being.
